SOCIAL DISTANCING DOESN’T HAVE TO BE BORING IN FARMINGTON

While we’re all doing our part to remain safe and healthy in the midst of the COVID-19 outbreak, practicing social distancing and self-quarantine, there can be a very real tendency to grow restless. While we’ve all been discouraged or outright mandated not to leave our homes unless absolutely necessary, there is plenty that you can do in that safe haven known as The Garage.

While you have some extra time on your hands, you can take this as an opportunity to keep your hands busy and your mind occupied with some creative and productive projects! Drake Custom Coatings in Farmington, of course, encourages all of our customers to stay safe, even if it feels like the world has come to a screeching halt. That said, here are five simple projects that are calling your name from your garage!

JUMP START YOUR SPRING CLEANING

Depending on the frequency that you use your garage, it may or may not be in a state of disarray. Now that it would appear that many of us have some time on our hands, this is the perfect opportunity to get a jump on your spring cleaning!

For the majority of our customers, their garages aren’t simply a place to park their vehicles when they come home from work — they also serve a double function as a combination tool shed/workshop/studio. A clean and organized workspace is a highly productive workspace, and getting all of your things in order is the first step you should take to really up your garage game!

Start by clearing out all of the junk. Because the garage is sometimes an “out of sight, out of mind” space, it’s easy for things to pile up, knowing that “someday you’ll deal with it.” It seems that “someday” has arrived, whether we like it or not. Take a moment to make a general assessment of all of the items in your garage. Once you have a good idea of what is and isn’t absolutely necessary, make the executive decision to toss what isn’t needed. We do recommend that, rather than tackling the whole garage at once, work your way through section by section, slowly but surely revealing the valuable garage real estate that has been hiding beneath all of your junk. The extra breathing room will be beneficial to finally getting organized! Give everything a good sweep or even a mopping, and revel in your delightfully clean garage!

CLEAN UP YOUR TOOLS

How long has it been since you sat down and gave your tools a good cleaning? Have you ever cleaned your tools? Do you know whereabouts your tools are? Take the time now to give those rusty pliers a good scrubbing and polish your hammer collection until they sparkle like new. Get rid of your older tools that don’t work anymore. Many tool brands provide a lifetime warranty on their products, so take the time to do a little research and see if you can get any of your old, busted tools replaced for free! Before too long, you’ll have a cleaned set of tools that are practically showroom ready and prepared for your next project.

ENHANCE YOUR TOOL COLLECTION

With everyone more or less sheltering in place, it’s safe to say that you’ll have some time to do some online shopping. With all of the money that you’re saving by not driving around all the time, you may have a little extra room in the budget to make a tool purchase or two on something that you’ve had your eye on for a while. Through all of this craziness, the postal service, UPS, and FedEx are all still going strong. Once you’ve organized and cleaned up your garage and fixed up your existing set of tools, take inventory and see what’s missing from your tool arsenal, and treat yourself to a new tool addition.

TIE UP YOUR LOOSE ENDS

During your garage cleanup process, you may have stumbled across a long-lost project from yesteryear that you never got around to finishing. This is as good a time as any to tie up any loose ends that have been gathering dust! Create a new storage system for all of the Christmas lights that you need to find every year during the holidays, or finally hang up those bike racks that you bought two years ago. You may have a whole list of incomplete to-dos, and now you can take advantage of this downtime to cross them off your list.

TRY A NEW PROJECT

Hand washing is a central focus of keeping healthy during this season, but that doesn’t mean you can’t have some fun getting them dirty in the first place! If you’ve wanted to tackle a new project, or spend some time working on your car, use your newfound spacious and organized garage and get to work!
